Why do some feel uncomfortable to be seen in a bra and panty but not in a bikini?

There isn't much difference between a bikini and a bra and panties yet some women are self conscious to be seen in a bra and panties. Why is this?

  • I have always wondered the same thing, especially considering that often underwear covers more than bikinis. But not all women are like that. I have been around many women who are comfortable being seen on heir underwear, at least by friends.

  • I think it's conditioning. We've all been conditioned to cover, hide, and cloth ourselves over our bra and underwear, and though you say the two articles of clothing are the same, underwear has a tendency to be a bit more lacy, or sheer, or look like underwear as opposed to the lycras and patterns and shapes of swimsuits, and besides, not all women hit the beach in a bikini because they do not like to show everything off, so it literally is not the exact same for them because they wouldn't be caught in a bikini on the beach anymore than walking around in their underwear.

  • Because one's purchased with the intention of being worn in public, and the other isn't.

It's about the circumstances, not the cut.

  • Think about it. You're in the privacy of your home, you don't wanna be seen. Bikini? You put that on because you WANT to be seen. Big difference in mindset.

  • Look on instagram - women are posting pics of themselves practically naked or in scanty underwear just for "likes". Seems to me there is no self consciousness. Society has lost it's standards for privacy and intimacy. I get your question though -- same amount of skin exposure. Honestly, you could probably wear a bra and panty set and no one would know it wasn't a bikini.

  • I see loads of other girls on the beach outside our home. It is very difficult to know what are bikinis and what are matching bra and pants. <English word!

  • As a woman, I have NO idea why other women do this. I guess where the lingerie (or swimwear) was purchased in store, lingers in her mind well after the purchase.

Bought in lingerie section: No one can see this except "him" <3

Bought in swimwear section: I'm going to wear the hell out of this at the beach/pool! Woo! (and maybe get some looks, too)

  • Bras and panties are regarded as under garments and taboo, a bathing suit in the proper setting is... a bathing suit... and it's deemed acceptable.

  • because when you are seen in swim wear, it is outdoors. they have consented to being seen in such clothing. when you see someone in underwear and they are uncomfortable it is usually because you have walked in on them and they have not consented. wouldn't you feel the same if someone walked in on you in nothing but boxers?

  • It's generally accepted to wear a bikini in public but underwear, definitely not.

Underwear is deemed to be more 'intimate' so if there were women who began to wear it outside then I think there would be an outcry. Couldn't see it becoming acceptable somehow.

  • Because if you see a girl in a bikini, she is allowing you to see her like that. She is okay with it. Is you see a girl in a bra and panties, it is considered intimate. If you see me in a bra and panties, I'm not giving you consent to see me like that, but if you see me in a bikini I'm allowing you to see me like that

  • Because if I'm wearing a bikini, I'm willing and ready to show off my body. If I'm wearing just my underwear, chances are I'm not in a public space and whoever sees me is encroaching on my private space.

  • looking at the other girls responses pretty much explains everything. however, I grew up wearing panties around the house all the time so I'm pretty comfortable with wearing panties or whatever really

  • When you wear your bra and panties, it is intimate. Those are not meant to be displayed in public, where as a bikini is made to be seen outside, on the beach. Although there isn't much to a bikini, it is completely different than your lingerie.

Lining is different, patterns are playful not sexy/revealing, and padding is different. Plan and simple, bras and panties are made for you (and your significant other, depending on how old you are :p) and bikinis are made to be shown off, worn to the beach.

  • It's all about consent. Bikini is meant to be shown. While bra and underwear is meant to be worn under your clothes and not seen.

  • Underwear is worn in a private setting where you're not expecting to be seen. If someone sees you in your underwear and you're embarrassed, it's usually because you were unprepared to be seen and thought that you were alone and secure. It's embarrassing because it's a shock.

Bikinis are worn in a public setting where you are expecting to encounter other people. You're not going to be so embarrassed or startled because you wore the bikini and planned to go somewhere where there would be many other people. It's not as embarrassing because there's no element of surprise or intrusion of privacy.
