She is probably uncomfortable going on the date with you, but is too nice to turn you down. I think she is still interested in you as a friend but is scared it will get awkward if you two go out, especially if she doesn't know you that well.
What she did was rude, but I'm pretty sure she was freaking out about it and had second thoughts and thought it would be nicer to just not show up instead of calling you last minute saying she has no feelings for you or that she felt awkward about it.
Try being friends with her first and see it that can work towards something. Or ask her to hang out and do something less official. It will also be much easier if you are with a group of firends because it will be a laid-back situation. And remember to flirt. (:

She could have had the curiosity to call you and tell you something came up. I mean, if she did this once, how many more times will she do it? I suggest you set things straight with her and let her know that you would like her to be very straight forward with you, and let you know when things pop up. I mean, you don't want this to happen again do you?
Another reason why a girl might do this is because she is simply not interested and doesn't know how to tell you.
Because some girls think it makes them more attractive, or maybe she was simply really busy, however, she should've called you as soon as she could've. Another reason girls may do it is to get attention, they want to you to show how much you like them, and they figure that if they show that they're not interested or are playing hard to get, you'll show that you like them even more than normal. All in all, playing hard to get is stupid; and if you do it, at least know when to stop.
