Was he embarrassed in a good way or bad way? How should I respond to him?

I’ve been talking to a Japanese guy for some time now, we’ve been really good friends but I started to realize I like him. I’ve been cautious with not being too flirty since I’ve heard that being too straightforward can be odd since they aren’t used to it.
We talk every day and the conversation lead to a point where we complimented each other so then I said he’s been so respectful and nice to me and that I really appreciated that and told him he’s such a gentleman. Nothing too extreme.
He then answered with, “Really? You think that? You are embarrassing me haha”.
So then I said, “Hahaha, that’s really cute ☺️”.
He then said, “Stop it~ 😑 haha”.
I didn’t know if he took it wrong or not so I said, “Haha ok I will 😅”.
So that’s when he said, “No it’s ok, it’s just that Japanese men aren’t told they are cute from a woman so I felt embarrassed 😜”.

Does he mean embarrassed like in a good way or bad way? Should I just respond normal or say something that is obviously flirty and wait for his reaction?
