How to not be boring?

I usually start with the weather, by making an open-ended observation such as "perfect day, wish we had more of these" or "how many days until summer?" Granted, the weather may seem like a very trite topic, however it's probably the most neutral way of initiating a conversation.

Observations on your surrounds work great too, like if you are in a classroom, comment on something dated or tacky, or if you're in a pub, comment on some weird decorative thing hanging on the wall.

Beginning with a neutral topic lowers their guard, so you can then add slightly more personal questions, about his/her field of study, work, choice of music, books, family (nothing too personal - just if they have siblings or something), or just talk about the news or celebrity buzz. Something you can personally relate to, so that you can actually reciprocate her response and keep the conversation going.

The biggest secret to not seeming boring, is just being engaged in what she is saying, and a bit of a smile helps a lot too. If you truly listen, they'll be plenty to talk about, because even shy people love to talk about themselves once you've put them at ease with neutral conversation and a bit of humour.

I think if you are interested in whatever the other person is interested in you'll seem interesting. People normally wear this on their sleeves too (Ie: I'm into partying, I'm into education, I'm into motorcycles...w/e) - Dale Carnegie advice.

I know what you mean. I think it takes a certain kind of girl for you, but what I generally do is ask questions about the other person. I just keep asking them questions. I basically let them talk.

dude I know how you feel, it be very awkward if you and a girl can't seem to find something to talk about, my suggest is to ask her what she likes (such as music, food, sports teams, hobbies) things like those to break the ice. I hope this helps
