If he's hanging around some shady people, he might not want you around them. Although, I'd question why he was hanging around them to begin with if he thinks being around them won't be good for you (why would it be good for him?).

I'd keep my distance if I were you, though. If he's hanging with the wrong crowd and for some reason can't get out, that just smells like trouble.

Maybe not with the intention of protecting her, maybe just trying to keep friends seperate. That's what I do.
