Buy him a drink at the bar? Good idea or no?

If you're doing this for the first time, let me share two things with you that guys already know:

1) Most times you approach someone, you get shot down. This is reality. Even if you're awesome. Some people aren't single. Some are single but not looking to meet anyone that month. Some are in a bad mood. Some, you're not their type. Some will decide that anyone in a bar is scum, even though they're in a bar. Some just won't like something odd. The odds are always against you. But ... if you keep trying this in life, sometimes it works out!

2) Buying the drink is an expensive way to avoid being obvious. Buying him a drink won't make him any more likely to be interested in you. You are not doing it to impress him. You are doing it because you are afraid to walk up and simply ask if you can drink with him. Right? Maybe keep your money, approach, talk to him, and if the conversation is going okay, THEN buy him a drink. Then tell him he owes you something.

don't start of with paying a drink , no-one refuses a free drink , and he'll accept even when he doesn't like you , so you better go chat first , and later on decide to buy something :)

You could just ask him "hey, wanna do a shot with me"? That way, you don't necessarily have to be the one to buy a drink. If you're lucky he'll say yes, and HE may even offer to pay.
