Why do girls think making the first move is desperate?

Why do girls think it’s desperate for a girl to make the first move?

If you’re an average-looking or good-looking girl, guys will approach you occasionally, but chances are low that the specific guy you want will approach you. Doesn’t that bother you?

Guys like being approached, so I can only assume that it’s the opinions of other girls that girls fear. Maybe some girls think that if other girls start making the first move, they themselves will get less male attention, so they try to undermine those other girls’ confidence. What do you think?

Obviously we all fear rejection. But that's a different issue from seeming desperate, which is what this question is about.
