Well, it looks burned to crap then that would suggest over baked. Are you sure it's not just under cooked? Asparagus usually starts our firmer and softens up with cooking. I guess it could go the other way again, I've never overcooked it that bad.1

How long did you bake it? When I do mine in the oven I try to buy the thinner stalks and cook it for about 15 minutes. It's still slightly crunchy but not mushy and you can cut it.0
