Never had Marmite, but tried Vegemite when I was abroad in Australia. A roomie had told me that it was the "Nutella of Australia", she slabed it on, putting far too much on my toast - it was nasty! However I was prepared some toast with a bit of Vegemite and butter by a friend who told me that my roomie served it wrong, and I found it to be kinda tasty. I was told by a friend from England that Marmite is pretty much the same.
I’ve never tried this but I love vegemite which I’ve heard it’s the same but vegemite has a stinger taste.

I wouldn't think of slathering it on a crumpet due to its (arguable) potent flavor, but I might consider using it an ingredient to build up the complexity of flavor in a meat dish.
I've tasted both. It won't happen twice :)
