Is it rude to order the most expensive entree on a menu if you’re not paying?

I was having a conversation with friends and this came up.

If you are out to eat, and someone else has preemptively offered to pay for the meal, is it rude to order the most expensive item on the menu?

I think it’s obviously rude if you had no intention of ordering it, or if you are ordering it simply because it’s the most expensive item. However, one of my friends said even if they planned on ordering that item, they’ll refrain from doing so if someone else has offered to pay.

Im curious to hear what everyone thinks, and please share what country/region you’re from so we can see if opinions vary from society to society.
