How do you feel about painting with period blood to "empower" women and decrease the stigma of periods?

Question

Apparently two BuzzFeed employees wanted to take a stand against the stigma of periods by painting with, you guessed it, their own period blood. They collected it in menstrual cups and then painted and displayed the artwork to their co-workers.

I want to know what other women, and especially feminists think about this. Personally, I find it to be pretty creepy and unhygienic. Yes, women have periods and we shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of that fact, but that doesn't mean we need to display our period blood to the world. I would feel the same way if someone was painting with any other type of blood or bodily fluids, it's just not something that I want to see and as a woman, I don't feel "empowered" by this at all. But what do you think?

Periods are the vigina's way of cleaning itself. Very little of that matter is the unfertilized egg.

The fact that women have periods can be respected as simply as that. Mesnttual cycles can be fierce beasts. That's why we track them on our phone and double insert tampons on heavy days.

I think the fact that men have mostly quit mocking PMS and have no problem buying tampons, icecream and coming over to just hang out even at the beginning of relationships is progress.

It's like yay you got your period and I hope you keep having it because I don't want a baby right now.

Honestly it's the equivalent to doing a painting from nasal mucus because that what they both mainly are.

I'm not a bra burner, I don't look to set men and women further apart nor do I look to prove men and women are exactly the same and equal at every task.

In most cases we just want a seat at the table. France's parliament just elected something around 38% of its parliament consisting of females? That's a seat at the table and most socioeconomic research proves a more balanced council yields better results. You have to halves of the same whole whose brains are wired differently having open discuss from different perspectives that both make sense but with different apppraoch and reasons.

Especially when dealing with Putin, women at the table in France is a very good thing. He's playing the long game. He's playing a covert game in the short and honestly acting in ways the most wealthy girl who wants to sabotage her friends in high school behaves.

There is no stigma against periods this is such bullshittery. The people re-enforcing this are just ideologically charged idiots.

The reason it's not discussed because it is objectively disgusting to hear about people's bodily functions. It's the same reason nobody wants to talk about how they literally shit and what kind of wet dreams they had the night before.

Also doing this makes absolutely no goddamn sense at all. How is creating some nouveau modern art rubbish supposed to appeal to people who might genuinely be misguided and see it as demonic or whatever (such orthadox jews). All this nonsense does is appeal to people who have the same ridiculous ideological charge and think "yes, yes this is beautiful I am so inspired you are so unique and break the barriers!"

The only way to combat ignorance is with education. And this doesn't educate anyone in the slightest.

I think that even though it's unconventional it still has an important message. Not necessarily for us but for women in other cultures who are told their natural body functioning exactly how it should is so disgusting and shameful that women on their periods aren't allowed in their own home or allowed to cook their own food.

It's even a huge issue in India where women are too ashamed to hang their menstral cloths to dry outside. They cloths don't dry properly and aren't able disinfected without the sunshine so women end up sick or with skin infections.

So something like this that shows people unashamed and accepting of menstration is really really important.

That's certainly a valid point but how is something like this going to help women in other countries who likely don't even have the resources or ability to see it? Yes, internet exists there but that doesn't mean it's accessible to everyone or AS accessible as it is to so many people here in America (or the West in general). I just feel like for such issues as these that are SO prevalent in other cultures, it's going to take more than just some people making a video of themselves painting with period blood to change the general public's view of periods. Of course, if it does end up helping people in those places then that's great. I still find it very unsanitary though and to promote being so open and "out there" with bodily fluids could do more harm to some people in those other countries, health-wise. Just another viewpoint to consider. I guess everything has pros and cons though.

Neither disgusting nor empowering to me. I get the point, but I think the best way to de-stigmatize periods is just to talk about them like a normal thing, because they are. Women shouldn't have to feel embarrassed buying tampons or being honest about what they're going to the bathroom to do. Just because only half the population does it rather than everyone, shouldn't make it more shameful. But just like going pee or poop is normal, but we don't need to paint with it, I don't think we need to paint with period blood either.

Honestly, if I were a woman, I would probably dislike Buzzfeed more than men do. They often try to represent women and their struggles but their brand of feminism is so contradicting and hypocritical that it makes women as a whole, look like idiots. And then they come up with stunts like this, probably to try and stay relevant, because I think they know that people (even women) are starting to dislike their message of "men shouldn't do this, but women can if they want."

What stigma? There isn't a stigma. I hate when people perpetuate falsehoods like these. Every guy knows about period blood to the point that they're often understanding and patient with women who are menstruating. It sounds like Buzzfeed is trying to target young boys in middle school and high school who still probably think girls have cooties. Christ, ladies, give these kids some time to grow up.

There's nothing 'empowering' about the blood/uterine lining that 99.9% of women lose on a monthly basis. It's a natural process that requires zero effort on a woman's part so.. I rarely use this argument because it's rarely valid, but in this case, I honestly don't think it's something that a guy would be very aware of. You don't know what it's like to deal with actually having a period, to receive the subliminal messages of shame and taboo that surround menstruation in our society. It's not obvious things, like people yelling in the street about periods being gross. It's subtle things, like feeling scared to go to a sleepover with your friends because people might notice that you have your period. That may not sound like a big deal, but it can be more damaging than you might think.

I feel the same way about this as I would if some one decided to paint with their own feces in an attempt to show that it was natural and that they shouldn't be ashamed of defecating i. e. disgusted. There is no point to this, I don't know of any one who has even suggested women should feel ashamed for menstration (seriously, I want fucking sources to this claim because that is utter bullshit), and its unhigenic and in no way empowering. In fact by definition: give (someone) the authority or power to do something. What authority or power is this giving exactly? The power to wipe your bodily waste on a wall? Great, you could have done that any way, its just generally accepted as being both unhygienic and disgusting so we tend to avoid doing it. I really don't think feminist know what the term "empower" means to be honest as they misuse it all the time. I personally think the concept is just plain dumb and extremely unhygienic and I'm a person more familiar than most with female empowerment. I used to teach women's studies and have two academic achievements in women and gender studies. While it is nothing to be ashamed of, it is still blood and blood that is transmitted from a portion of one's body that is a vector for disease. Regardless of how much people want to show that it is something not to be ashamed of, blood is blood. Blood can be a biohazardous material to other entities.

HELLO! Well as a woman who grew up in a household were we did not discuss periods and sex and anything regarding my female parts! I had the school discuss these topics with me and the teacher discuss these elements with me! therefore I felt pretty darn underpowered when I began menstruating and feel even more underpowered when discussing sex! so yes I want the stigma to be taken away! Yes I want the world to acknowledge that women have period and that it may not sound attractive but it is nature and you should not be ashamed of bleeding ! as in fact it is a healthy bodily function ! but to use my period blood for painting isn’t my preference when it comes to sending out this message to society ! instead let these messages begin at home, let us sit out children down and discuss these topics ! let us not let just the school to education your children please ! also let us openly discuss these topics in focus groups at schools and universities and so on !

I am a feminist and the idea that there should be less stigma around periods is great but I think this particular idea is pretty gross. To me, period blood is like any other bodily function or fluid, so it's just not hygienic and it's pretty weird. Blood is actually considered a biohazard material since it's a good way to transmit diseases... if you attend first aid/cpr classes, they teach you to avoid touching anyone's open injuries without protective gear. I think these are mentally ill women who have spent too much time in the echo chamber, who've become so affected by ten year old boys posting mean comments about being grossed out by menstruation that they don't mind damaging their websites image just to spite them.

Painting with blood is certainly nothing new, menstrual blood, perhaps. I have a piece called " lady in Rouge" that I painted using my blood (obviously not menstruation) and supposedly some of Sade's work was written in his blood. I am interested in how it turns out.
