Does society keeps guys from growing hair or boys just like having short hair?

I feel like it's a combination of reason 2-3 and some may feel like society may not accept them either.

Personally, I've got long hair and I don't really care.

It's societal conditioning which goes both ways. We are taught to stereotype males with long hair as "lazy', among other worse things. When a guy's hair reaches a certain point, people start to comment "you need to get a hair cut" as if he is letting his appearance slip if he doesn't cut it.

In the flip side, women are taught a different set of standards. To think of long hair as beautiful, and necessary if they want to look pretty. Some have reservations of cutting because it doesn't look as pretty, or could be boyish.

Hair is also extra work, especially long hair. For women, it seems worth it to have "beautiful" hair, but for men looking beautiful is not a factor. So cutting it all off just makes it one less thing for him to think about. Some guys who do grow their hair neglect it compared to women, and so it begins to look bad when unkempt. Since their is no societal motivation for them to have beautiful hair, a lot of guys don't really try all that hard when their hair grows long, and they are pressured to get rid of it.

However, that is changing with the influence of social media groups that seek to promote confidence in guys with long hair, such as "The Long Hairs" group which teaches men how to style and care for long hair.
