Normally the foreskin loosens up and removes itself right before or when puberty starts. Retracting it before can cause serious issues and should only be done by a professional if there is a serious issue such as inflammation.
I think it was just something I naturally started doing but yes teach your son to wash it for obvious reasons
Mason is 19 months and he's just starting to pull on it and start the separation process.

I think I was around 12 or so. About 7 weeks ago, I begun to keep it retracted 24/7
