What's the worst thing a doctor ever said to you?

I used to be a medic. My wife is a nurse.
I know, doctors have years more medical training. I'm not comparing but I know more than the average person does.

Doctors may be educated. That does not mean they know everything. I have first hand experience with doctors withholding treatment because they just want the hospital bed open for someone with a complicated case that will bring in more insurance money to the hospital. Doctors prescribing medication because of the kickbacks they'll get from a pharmaceutical company.

A good doctor is be measured by getting you off medication, not by prescribing you more medication.

"You can't have pain in your prostate unless you have an STD." Which is a lie. And the ass never conducted any tests. I had to find another doctor to figure it out. The second doctor also didn't conduct any tests. He just put me on more medication. Then I went to see a chiropractor for something unrelated and my prostate pain came up. Two adjustments later, no more prostate pain. Always get a second opinion if you can. Insurance restrictions almost seem to drive us towards a set series of actions (like an algorithm but with little latitude to seek additional options, to actually investigate). Once a doctor has a prescribed path based on insurance guidelines (not medicine) it's hard to adjust their path.

"I think it's time you start preparing to say goodbye to your father." She told me this over the phone as I started the 1500 mile drive to say goodbye. He was 77 years old and with pneumonia. If I wasn't a medic I would have just taken her word for it. But I started asking questions. Once she realized that I knew wtf I was talking about she knew she couldn't pull a fast one. When the doctor did what I told her to my Dad survived and lived another two years. One of the nurses told me quietly and separately as he was being discharged "if you hadn't come to see your Dad he would have died. We see it all the time. Doctors find the easiest method to treatment and if the family is ignorant the elderly are just written off to die."

I'm all for medicine when the patient's well being is the priority. Too many doctors are driven by insurance and pharmaceutical companies and, especially the elderly, patients are dying in droves.

Doctors are educated. That doesn't mean they're right.

I was having my impacted wisdom teeth cut out. During the procedure the roots on one of the teeth evidently broke, leaving their remains lodged in my gums. The doctor said, "Oh S#! T, the damn thing broke."

*When my first daughter was born very premature:
"You have a 5% chance of delivering a live baby"...(thank God she survived those slim odds and is now a 24 year old with a child of her own-my grandson 🥰)
*The day I was released and she had to stay :"She's doing great for her gestational age, but the slightest infection could still kill her"
*The ER doctor who called when I got home and found a message to call immediately:
"If you're his (my hubby) Medical Power Of Attorney, you need to get those papers and get to the hospital ASAP"(That time thankfully was a false alarm)
Not a doctor but the WORST, when the paramedic said "Things just took a turn for the worst, your husband's heart stopped, we're trying to do what we can but he's not going to make it"(he never regained consciousness and died on the kitchen floor)
*When my daughter was giving birth to my grandson, and had preeclampsia and her blood pressure was getting extremely high
"your daughter just went from being in danger of having seizures to in danger of having a stroke"(she had to have emergency C-section, but thankfully her and baby came out of it fine)

Most of the time I was fucked up when I got there and they made me better so I didn't get bad news from the doctor the bad news already happened before.

Take a couple of regular pain pills and you should be fine, drink more water or exercise more. I prefer doctors that don't always go for the easiest answers first but actually consider doing a test or two to check something, I think its better to over do it than under do it

When I was like 6 I was put to sleep to get stuff done to my teeth and I woke up cause my mom was out of the room and there was scary tools he was using. So I started crying. My dentist told me that if I don't shut up he was going to give me a shot in my mouth. I told my mom and she switched my dentist.

It's terrible, but it also makes sense. People sue doctors when they get an optimistic diagnosis that doesn't play out perfectly, and some people won't make necessary changes to their behavior unless the diagnosis is severe.

It's a lot easier on people to do better than expected than to do worse than expected.

That I was faking the level of pain I was in for workman's comp. I continued treatment after they pulled the comp, and the MRI and stay found a bone shattered and I had fragments in my discs and poking in towards my spinal cord and they had to remove them.

Doctor apologized after I got lawyers involved, and told him to go fuck himself

"you don't need a splint for your torn ligaments. they will heal on their own eventually" (probably makes sense to explain that we have univeral healthcare and they need to legitimate handing out stuff in front of the insurance, so it's extra work for no extra pay for the doctor)...
lucky for them, they handed me a splint upon demanding one in a very unfriendly tone. or else i would have sued the crap out of this hack.

That's a shame was there when they told my wife that. Told her 6 months to a year. She lived over 10 years past that. I was told they couldn't fix my problem. It took me awhile to accept that. I mean with all the technology and advances in medicine i just couldn't understand. Well best of luck to you

It may not sound like a big deal, but when you're desperate and nearly suicidal exclusively because of your health condition, some asshole trying to dismiss it's existence is downright insulting.
