Smith machines or free weight?

okay so, I do smith machines squats when I have leg days and always someone is telling me don't use smith machines they are bad for building leg muscles but I can feel my legs hurt which means it works right? anyway do you guys think the difference between smith machine and free weight squatting
do you get more contraction and pressure with free weight? I think so but
does it mean I should stop doing smith machines and focus mostly on free weight
just like I do with deadlift and for my chest?
I am somewhat beginner in gym its been 6 months since I've started and I got so much better at preforming but I don't know if I should switch from smith machines to free weight squats?
or should I keep performing it its not like I want huge legs lol just enough so I can endure daily activities
