A mistaken gift is where you get a little confused about what the person actually wants. Usually given by elderly relatives and you have to pretend you really love it.

Not exactly the same, but when I was a kid, my mother would ask us what we wanted for Christmas, but then she would do her own interpretation of the request. It never went well. And it's not like we asked for expensive things that they couldn't afford - often the substitute costed even more.
For example, I asked for a slot car track 3 years in a row. And 3 years in a row, I got something else instead. I never wanted to be ungrateful, but putting the same thing on the top of my list 3 years in a row should have been a hint...
I’ve given a mistake gift at a work Christmas party (which is silly). I don’t really want to spend money on a coworker unless we are actually friends. I think the chick had a PlayStation and I got her a Xbox controller. In my defense I don’t do a lot of gaming and I really didn’t know her well. It is what it is. Ya, things were awkward. 😂
