Ok so I have got into watching Chicago Fire on the TV now and I am curious is it common for fire crew and ambulance teams to share stations and space?

Some places run EMS from hospitals. The vast majority are shared stations.2

It is, because so many fire calls will involve dealing with medical issues (skin burns, smoke inhalation, electric shock, etc.). An American city or county with a limited or more modest public service budget will also combine these "emergency service" functions.1
