Most of these, when used alone, are just good for sparring, not actual fights...
Taekwondo has little practical use--almost all kicks, which are slower than punches, easier to block, and really doesn't cover much else. Not very versatile.
Karate doesn't teach enough grappling and improvisation.
Really, I would agree that the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. You take Boxing or Karate plus kickboxing with some Krav Maga style weapon disarms, you should be able to handle about anything.
I was looking at random youtube videos... there was a krav maga video on defending from a knife strike. The instructor's solution? Stab the enemy in the throat with your own knife!1
