I don't think we should fancy ourselves as blessed with strength as David who did kill a lion with his bare hands. For someone of this time to do so it requires mainly tremendous strength and size, say an MMA fighter standing on 7'2 feet, and luck in getting hold of a grown lion in a headlock or the like and ferociously strangling till dead. Even then it's not a guarantee.

It doesn't specifically says David hit the lion with something, but common sense should tell you there's no way a man can kill a full grown male not injured lion with his bear hands. Samson did however, kill a lion with his bear hands and tore it open but Samson had the spirit of the lord come upon him when he got in trouble and did that miracle. Lol

It was the Old Testament, it was hardly unlikely as God made fantastic wonders all the time. Daniel survived an entire night in a pit full of lions without a scratch, that David, a blessed and ordained King by God, should be able to best a lion is nothing to Yahweh, who is far above common sense.

David himself said the lord deliver the lion and bear into his hands. And God did perform a miracle for Daniel in making those pack of hunger lions stay calm the whole night. But the next morning those lions tore apart all those men and their family apart as soon they were thrown into the den, who set poor Daniel up to be killed. 😅

Assuming that your hands STAYED empty, rather than running to find a makeshift weapon- not with muscle mass, no; humans are very much the 98-lb weaklings of the great ape family. But with knowledge of striking, pressure points, and basic predator and lion-specific psychology, you might be able to drive it off. Naturally, the odds go down if it's specifically hunting you, or outright attacking you.
