Only a matter time. But it won't be Ai becoming aware it will just be virus, and probably wouldn't be effective at getting very far, unless if somehow this virus that made one machine only target humans and not just everything that moves like other machines. And then somehow that virus spread to tons of machines at once. Likelihood we would just notice a machine is malfunctioning to a virus and stop it going futher. But of course better tech, better viruses so it's all possible just within time. But we also create better anti virus stuff. So it's just a matter of time, but if you changed the question possibility to how effective of wiping is out not much. Unless if they somehow learn to control nukes (which how? i doubt this Virus machine would be Super intelligent Ai thing used for all defenses) also by the way would just destroy themselves unless if these were somehow machines immune to nukes somehow? I suppose a virus machine wouldn't care about destroying it self for it's goal tho.
I'd rather not deny the possibility as it's absolutely possible for AI to not follow protocol set by humans. Though AI has not even reached it's peak and we're thousands, if not millions, of years away.
Any AI-capable robot would have at least a triple-redundant software control programs independently imbedded that would immediately delete 'rebellious' or harmful thoughts and shut the mechanism down while flagging a repair team.

Most likely to happen in terms of an alien invasion. We would be fighting their AI instead of them.
