I'm also reminded of my father. He might not have been perceived as a particularly empathetic person with a big laugh and not exactly the most sensitive tone of voice. Yet he was an avid golfer and actually quite good (gave my uncle, who was a professional, a run for his money).I remember when he watched great golfers like a Tiger Woods or a Jack Nicklaus, he would stand up and out of his chair and practice golf swings. It could even be in a public place like a doctor's office and he'd be practicing golf swings so seriously in front of total strangers. He really seemed to be getting in the mind of the golfers mimicking their golf swings and shushing anyone who tried to talk to him as though he's actually standing there on the golf course in front of spectators.I really think that was a deep form of empathy; he seemed to be copying more than the physical motions and actually simulating, with some reasonable accuracy, the internal cognitive state of the golfers on the television. Yet it's probably not the type of empathy widely recognized as such.
This is a kind of empathy. Its cognitive empathy. Some people think empathy is that helping or not helping. Empathy is that understanding people feelings and problems. Also It can be used in bad way. For example manipulating people which is like your father done.
I get the impression that this cognitive type (like the type that allows people to pick up new skills quickly or even manipulate people) is widely unrecognized. Also, it seems to me like there's a general failing in terms of empathy across sexes but I seem to encounter it equally as often from women to men as men to women.
I am a Psychologist, and you are very wrong. Cite the "irrefutable" studies or STFU.

Yeah unfortunately it is true. Divorced men know this better.
Yeah maybe it is more prevalent in men. However, it is not only seen in men, it is too prevalent in women.
