Why do schools skip the letter 'E' when grading?

It's ABCD then straight to F.

Is there a reason for that?

  • Old system

    Excellent

    Satisfactory

    Needs Improvement

    Unsatisfactory

    New System:

    A- Excellent

    B- Good

    C- Average

    D- Below Average

    F -Fail

The E is skipped to avoid confusion between the two systems.

  • Maybe it's cursed lol. :P

    I quoted this for you:

"About that "E" grade - some schools have used the E instead of F, but we speculate too many students tried to convince their parents the "E" stood for "excellent." It's much harder to trick parents into believing an "F" stands for "fantastic."

  • eye opener :)

    I have no idea...

the F for Failure seems protocol...laziness regarding everything else, A no brainer for best ..go down the alphabet then the problems occur :)

I dunno...seems weird when you think about it

  • I always kind of thought there should be an E from 59-50% and under 50% should be failing. 50 is a much more "even" number to be the cut off for failing anyway

  • I always assumed that it was because the "F" stood for "fail" because it is a failing grade. But I don't know for sure.

  • "It's commonly excepted that there is no E in the grading scale because F was for fail, and it's be too easy to turn an F to an E."

  • Cause people are lazy and don't feel like adding the extra line to turn the F into an E.

  • E is usually used in the citizenship category if your school has it on the report card
