It should absolutely be both ways.

When I'm in a relationship, me and the girl don't always divide the labor the same way, but we always do it in a way that's more or less equal.

Example: she may do the majority of the housework, while I do the majority of the yardwork. I usually work on the cars, the electronics/computers, and do household repairs and upgrades, and she usually does the decorating, laundry, and much of the cooking - though I cook a decent amount.

In one relationship, she went to school and only worked 2 days a week, so I was paying nearly all of the bills - but she did ALL of the housework and made nearly all of the meals - and was happy to take good care of me when I was home, just as I was happy to go out and work to keep a roof over our head and food on the table.

A man shouldn't be taken care of just because he's the man - he should be taken care of (at home) in recognition for the fact that he works hard when he's NOT at home to take care of his family. In the case of your brother, it sounds like he isn't doing much to take care of anyone, and if that's the case, then he doesn't need your mother, his girlfriend, or anyone else taking care of him either.

I believe everybody should be able to take care of themselves and be complete individuals who can do any house chore and don't really need anyone, they are with people not because the depend but because they like their company. Then in a relationship or family people have to talk and get to an agreement to split and assign chores. So maybe she always cook (my mom does that cause she loves cooking), maybe he prefers to be the one cooking (my uncle likes cooking and cooks better than my aunt), or maybe both like to and they take turns (my sister and his boyfriend). Each couple is different so they split chores differently.

Also your mother talking badly about this girl because "she's does not enaugh" for his son remembers me to an aquitances who had the same problem. That women also wanted her daughter in law to work more, like an old fashioned housewife, for his son, however she would feel bad if someone spoke like that about her own daughter.

I think both partners in a relationship should take care of their mate equally. Its basically up to both people to let their partner know what their needs are and that other partners responsibility to try and provide those needs. This is what makes a happy successful relationship.

This is the same thing that goes with my family. My family is more lax so although my dad says “A girl must be able to cook and take care of the family” they don’t force me to do it because I’m good with school. When I marry I want my husband to AT LEAST ASK. That’s thing with my family, they tell me and don’t ask. 🙄

I think both the male and the female should take care of each other but Independence is always on the first place. I'd never do something for my brother if he doesn't do any shit for me. I can do my own shit though so I don't need him in the first place. I understand that when I'm living together with someone it's a different story. The wife role is different from the sister role. That's the only exception I'd make and I'll do it with love.

Well how old is he? If he's still a teen then I don't expect much.

However when you're older then both people need to contribute to the relationship. It's not who should take care of who. It's more how can both do things to help out.

If the girlfriend isn't doing anything like working then she has no excuse I would expect her to at least cook as well.

Definitely equal here. I think taking care of my family has been my greatest honor, and I wouldn't have married a woman who didn't place the same value on it. We hold each other up, make each other better. Anything less is just... well, less.

In a relationship both people should contribute. Right now my dad is retired and doesn't work but he tries to help out by feeding the pets, cleaning up after them, watching dishes etc. So that when my mom comes home, the house looks nice. In other words they help each other.

In my family my father and I probably do more to take care of my mother and sisters than the reverse. But my mom/sisters do most of the cooking. It just depends on the individuals and the family and what works for them. Does your brother really do nothing or are you being a bit biased here?
