What if cohabitation also had legal matters, what would you guys do then?

What would you do if breaking up from a long-term relationship (cohabitation) also meant dividing shared properties and assets? It means Canada has gotten slick and isn't letting you just break up easily. I understand how more men are against marriage nowadays (I don't like how it's been turning into either) but what if living together meant the man gets screwed too?
