Why doesn’t a person who judges you all the time let you go when you say you want to go and does everything to hinder you from going?

Mothers often believe no one is good enough for their son. It sounds like she felt you had good potential, though, and didn't want to let you go. She felt by criticizing you, you'd be motivated to improve in the areas she wanted to see improvement. This is a dysfunctional pattern present in many parents, though it doesn't work.

My question for you is what were your reasons for sticking around if you saw both mother and son as terrible people? Never expect others to change for you. It sounds like this was in your past, so, hopefully you've moved on, yet it appears it still bothers you. There's no such thing as a bad experience, as long as we learn from it. Bring the knowledge forward and leave the pain in the past.

There are as many reasons for her acting like this as there are stars in the sky. However, the most probable being that she see something about you that even after judging you negatively... you're a hell of a lot better than anyone else she knows so far. Thus, she wants to scoop you up and have her son marry the one person she has found to be the most "worthy" of them all. 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps she felt she could fashion a diamond out of you with her constant derision. It appears her attention has done little for her son though.
