The problem is people tend to be impulsive. They don't consider long-term consequences to themselves and others before they decide to say or do anything. Short-term decisions are based on "if it feels good, do it." That's one reason we have unplanned pregnancies.

We're more likely to see long-term consequences if our eyes are open, but short-sighted people don't seem to care about what happens long-term. They live for the moment and often don't expect to have a long life, so figure they might as well live their life to the fullest.

Also, who is to determine if a decision is good or bad, since there is no universal guide to determine this? If you show me a situation where something is good, I'll show you another situation where the same choice is dysfunctional. The same would hold true if you judge something as dysfunctional. There will always be people quick to judge your decisions, if those decisions differ from what these people believe should be. It's not our place to judge what's good or bad for others, as long as no one is harmed by the choice.

The question to ask if whether our choice will take us toward our long-term objective. If not, are we willing to accept the cost of short-term thrills? Decision-making is a very personal issue, and most people aren't interested in hearing what others might think before they make their decisions. Whatever we write won't stop impulsive people from continuing their impulsivity. All we can do is ask ourselves if we want to legitimize our dysfunction by pointing out other people's dysfunction.
