If abuse in relationships is wrong, why are some people excusing it?

Last month, a girlfriend was excused for slapping her boyfriend just because he favored abortion. Then last week, a boyfriend was excused for slapping his girl just because she hurled out offensive words. I've seen certain people making ''you had it coming'' comments. Really? So they can hit you whenever you said hurtful stuff?

Honestly, does it even matter what was said? Even if they were to say ''Your family is stupid'' or ''I'll pee on your parents' grave'' is that an abusive to get violent and hit first?

is that an excuse to get violent and hit first?
Ironically these are the very same time who preach about keeping your hands to yourself and that if you hit first, you deserved to get hit back. And those people are now excusing hitting first just because you said horrible things/words.
