I expect most people won't actually read this and will give completely incorrect and foolish answers.

So this is my attempt to explain why, of the currencies of a relationship (chronological, emotional, mental, physical, monetary, and spiritual) money is actually the most important. I'll do this in three points, you can respond to one or all three if you want.

#1: Versatility of Funds
Of all the currencies money itself is the most versatile. It is not a complete replacement but it can work as an effective supplement towards a lack. A sound example is the inability to be somewhere but still sending a gift; usually that gift has some form of monetary value and may or may not have much of any other form of value thus "It's the thought that counts" being the adage.

#2: The Reduction of Stress
We hear the fairy-tale of the poor couple who loved each other greatly and while they never had anything always had enough. The reason it's such a beloved story is because it's terribly rare; most of the time monetary stress is the worst stress in a relationship because money itself reflects heavily against the other currencies particularly because of it's universal nature. The inability to afford something such as a need or very useful commodity can be read in many ways ranging from "You don't care enough" to "You're selfish" because the having to choose commodities, esp. if dueling, is grueling. Having enough money in a relationship not only helps alleviate stress but it makes a lot of issues no longer issues.

#3: The Minor Investments Count
This is the opposite of the above. She wears that eyeshadow that you love. He buys that suit that you adore. The haircuts, the gym membership, the small and large purchase for one another. The price itself doesn't matter but having enough money also allows you to be more spontaneous and giving. It keeps relationships alive when you can support them actively. Hugs are nice, hugs on the Riviera you always dreamt of? Nicer.
