GOP Congressman Made Emergency Calls To Police Just To See How Quickly They’d Come

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) made two false calls for emergency help from U. S. Capitol Police last week ― just to see how long it would take for officers to arrive, according to two Capitol Police officers.

Fortenberry told Capitol Police he wanted to test the duress button in his office, which signals an emergency situation. It was an unusual request, but one that Capitol Police agreed to, these officers said. So when Fortenberry pushed the button, they didn’t respond, because they knew it was a test.

However, according to the officers, it turns out the Republican lawmaker wasn’t testing the device itself; he was testing how quickly police would come to his office. When they didn’t come, he pushed the button a second time. Officers were almost to his office when they got word it was a test, so they turned back. This apparently upset Fortenberry, who concluded the officers were slow to respond.

A spokesperson for Fortenberry initially did not respond to multiple requests for comment. After the story published, his office provided this statement from Fortenberry’s chief of staff, Andrew Braner: “The Congressman strongly supports the Capitol Police, which is why we constructively worked through an unfortunate delay during a test of the duress alarm system with the police on the phone.”

The same week that officers say Fortenberry conducted his test, President Joe Biden and Hill leaders held a ceremony honoring Capitol Police Officer William “Billy” Evans, who was killed on April 2 when a vehicle rammed into a Senate barricade. Just weeks earlier, Biden and others honored another Capitol Police officer, Brian Sicknick, who died after protecting lawmakers and others during the violent insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

What the hell is wrong with us?
Less than a month after a white supremacist allegedly killed 51 people in Christchurch on March 15, New Zealand’s Parliament voted, 119 to 1, to make the possession of assault weapons illegal. Gun owners have until the end of September to turn in their weapons as part of a buyback program or face five years in prison. More than 10,000 firearms have already been turned in.

By contrast, at least 59 people have been killed in mass shootings this year (and more than 9,000 in other shootings, not counting suicides) and yet we are no closer to banning assault-style weapons. These were the weapons of choice of mass murderers in Newtown, Conn.; Aurora, Colo.; San Bernardino, Calif.; Sutherland Springs, Tex.; Las Vegas; Parkland, Fla.; Pittsburgh; Poway, Calif.; El Paso; and Dayton, Ohio. Seventy percent of voters and 54 percent of Republicans surveyed by Morning Consult-Politico support banning these weapons of war. Yet President Trump claims there is no “political appetite” for such action, meaning there is no appetite in the Republican Party to challenge the National Rifle Association.

Trump 'to order further troop withdrawal' from Afghanistan and Iraq

Those in Afghanistan will be cut from about 5,000 down to 2,500 by mid-January, officials said. In Iraq they will be reduced from 3,000 to 2,500.
President Trump has previously said he wants "all" troops home by Christmas.
He is refusing to concede the 3 November election to Joe Biden.
The withdrawal should be finished by 15 January, US media reported, just days before Mr Biden's inauguration as president.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tore into President Joe Biden for a reported plan to withdraw all U. S. troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11.

"The Biden administration plans to turn tail and abandon the fight in Afghanistan," McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said on the Senate floor on Tuesday. "Precipitously withdrawing U. S. forces from Afghanistan is a grave mistake. It is a retreat in the face of an enemy that has not yet been vanquished — an abdication of American leadership."

Senior administration officials told news outlets on Tuesday that they would keep troops in Afghanistan past the May 1 deadline that was part of a peace agreement between the Trump administration and the Taliban. The new deadline, Sept. 11, is the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.
