So this guy really liked me but now he's sending mixed signals. We never talked. But he's super gentlemanly. He does favors for me and those around me and asks my friends if they need help. I'm extremely shy so he spoke for me in class at least twice. Yesterday I think he was trying to make me jealous (he was flirting with a girl he never was interested in before.) We never talk but he's so sweet it's ridiculous. He used to be flirty too, sometimes I feel like he's trying not to flirt.

He used to be very flirty. He tried to make me jealous and would stare deep into my eyes at least three times everytime I saw him. he hit a guy I was checking out. Months passed and he had to speak to me and he was stammering and wasn't making sense. That night he said Goodnight (in person, before we never talked) and I replied. He sat near me the next morning and we didn't say anything to each other. As soon as our eyes met he would look away. At the same time a hot girl was eye effing him and he ignored her.
Time has passed since then. A week ago i spoke in class and he was staring dreamily with his mouth slightly open. Today I sat next to him. When he me and gave me the notes for the class. Then he did it for someone else came in. So I was like it doesn't mean anything. He was really confident in class. But we had to hold hands to make a circle, he held my hand tightly and was stammering when he spoke. Afterward he went over to talk to another girl (which he didn't go to talk to before). At first I was hurt, but he might have been trying to make me jealous like he did before. His friend was staring at me. Later I was walking around and I kept bumping into him. One time he was walking down the hall and he had his eyes on me the whole time. (I was like Daymn bby).
im gonna see him tonight. I was thinking of complimenting him or something (but not around his friends or my friends). Should I even bother?

I really like one of my male friends but I wonder if I should give up hope he feels the same. I'll admit I've been sending him mixed signals since I'm trying not to seem desperate.

He may like me because:
-He will text first if he doesn't hear from me after a while
-He occasionally asks how I am/what I'm up to
-He's concerned when I'm upset
-He touches me a lot and laughs at my jokes more than with other girls
-We play fight a lot (physically and verbally)

But:
-He's a generally friendly person (with many female friends)
-He jokingly said he's not attracted to me (part of our banter... or real?)
-He takes a while to text back sometimes (but is a generally horrible texter with all of his friends?)

Should I just give up hope? Please be honest. I don't want to keep pining over someone I have no chance with.
