I am a highly intelligent woman, though not a genius by any means. However, men my age tell me that intelligence is not a turn-on for them. They say that as long as a woman is "reasonably intelligent" that is what they need... This makes me think that I might be possibly too cerebral to attract men... I laugh but I'm not bubbly and I never dumb myself down for men.
Someone rightly pointed out that part of what put men off was my desire to correct things they said that were inaccurate or participate in verbal sparring (I appreciate a good debate). I've reigned that in with good results but I want a man who actually likes my intelligence.
Is this a matter of men liking different things? Does my intelligence make no difference at all? Or is it a matter of combining my intelligence with enough social leverage to not make it my main feature?
This isn't the first time this question has shown up in the comments of this blog - or in my e-mail. I have also discussed the topic at length with my sisters, their friends, and a couple of the girls I've dated. And judging from their absolute disbelief at what I've told them, there is some news to be shared here...

No woman wants to date a weak man. In fact, a man's attractiveness to women hinges on her perception of his personal strength. A man could manifest his strength in many ways: he could be financially powerful (rich), physically powerful (tall or strong), socially powerful (confident), intellectually powerful (smart or witty), morally powerful (good), politically powerful (highly positioned), etc.; but unless you respect and admire him for his strength, however it is manifested, you will not be attracted to him. Even the best-looking man in the world will be rejected by women once they realize he is weak.

There's two guys I know. Both brothers. Only a year apart in age. I've known them for a couple of years.

The oldest one first displayed signs of liking me. I am oblivious when it comes to these things, not good at reading signs at all, but my friends noticed his "obvious" attraction towards me. He would find ways to be around me, and blush around me, and stare at me when I was across the room or talking to my other guy friends, stuff like that. However, here lately that's stopped. I don't know if he's just gotten better at hiding his feelings or if I've now been stuck in the friend zone or if he's starting to give different signs that I, of course, am not picking up on.

We hang out a lot and we're good friends, he tells everyone I'm his sister. I don't know how to read him, though, he's a very complicated person. What makes it even harder is that he treats all girls practically the same. As in, he hugs and jokes around with and is super friendly with all girls. He's not flirty, that's just him. So now he's basically treating me the same as any other girl (besides calling me his sister).

The younger one is more awkward and reserved. I haven't really gotten to know him well until recently. The three of us always hang out but the younger one just cracks jokes and whatnot, not really letting you know the real him. Here lately I think we've been becoming good friends, though. He talks more to me and seems a lot more comfortable. Because of his reserved nature, though, I don't think he's the type of person to give off obvious signs of liking someone. I already suck with picking up on obvious signs, let alone subtle ones!

Do you think either of these guys could have an interest in me? Judging by the descriptions I gave of them, what sort of signs do you suggest I look out for?

I have recently started fancying a certain guy friend of mine. I've known him and his older brother since last summer. He is 2 years older than me and his older brother is 3 years older. The three of us hang out a lot and I'm good friends with both of them. The older brother used to have an obvious liking towards me, but now he's giving mixed signals and I'm not sure if he still does or if he now just views me as a sister. He used to blush around me and try to be around me. Now he still invites me everywhere, but doesn't blush or act different anymore. He teases me a LOT now. Both of them have become very comfortable with me, and I with them.

The older brother is very attractive but it's the younger one I have a liking for. We get along very well. I like his personality and we usually understand each others' viewpoints. He's very funny and intellectual. I used to fancy the older one but now I don't care if he likes me or not. I'm more compatible with the younger one. The younger one used to tease me a lot, but now we just talk and joke around and play video games together.
