Stiff Little Fingers were an Irish Punk band, releasing some good songs…. although i don’t have any album that i would consinder “favorite” basically…. maybe “nobody’s heroes” a little bit more!

Virgin Prunes on the other hand are a post-punk/gothic rock band, featuring Gavin Friday on vocals…the guy who released “Angel” during the mid-90s basically…which was a minor pop hit back then.

“The Moon Looked Down And Laughed” is the best Irish gothic rock album imo…. like many great gothic rock albums released during the mid-80s. :-)

All of them were Irish pop-rock bands active during the late 80s and had some moderate success around their area basically

Interestingly though Hothouse Flowers managed to achieve some success in America as well with their songs “Don’t Go” and “I’m sorry” both charting at a good spot in both US modern rock/mainstream rock charts

(“Don’t go” reached #7 and #16 in US modern rock/mainstream rock charts respectively,and “I’m Sorry” reached #12 and #23)

And The Adventures’ song “Broken Land” was the most played song on BBC Radio 1 in 1988 basically

Although there were some differences according to musical styles within each band,but all of them were branded as “pop-rock”

The Adventures were closer to the post-punk/new wave sound especially in their first album “Theodore and Friends”

Cry Before Dawn were more “alternative rock”

Hothouse Flowers had soul influences (that explains their success in America probably)

and In Tua Nua had more Irish Folk influences.



My personal favorite would be “The Sea Of Love” by The Adventures basically….besides their hit “Broken Land” this album had some other nice ballads like “Drowning In The Sea Of Love” or “Heaven Knows Which Way”

Also their other album “Theodore And Friends”

The Undertones were an Irish punk band fronted by Feargal Sharkey basically.

Their single “Teenage Kicks” was what made them became popular thanks to BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel who said that this song was his all-time favorite till his death.

After breaking up,Feargal Sharkey collaborated with The Assembly (fronted by Vince Clarke from Depeche Mode and Yazoo) and was featured in the vocals of the hit single “Never Never”

After that he had a short-lived carreer basically,releasing 2 albums,”Feargal Sharkey” & “Wish”

His song “Good Heart” from his self-titled album reached #1 in UK charts and that would be my favorite album from his career including some other nice catchy pop songs like “Someone and Somebody” or “It’s All Over Now”

Although my favorite song were he was a part of would be “Never Never” by The Assembly!

jMy favorite Irish band basically!

Boomtown Rats started in late 70s as a punk-rock band and later evolved into various other styles like new wave,reggae or synth-pop.

Band’s lead singer Bob Geldof is a well known activist and it was one of the 2 people who organised Live Aid in 1985 along with Ultravox’s Midge Ure

He followed a solo carreer as well,but his solo albums weren’t as good as Boomtown Rats’ works unfortunately

My favorite album by BR would be the ultra-underrated “V Deep”…i like the dark synth-pop style this album has,and songs like “Skin On Skin” or “Up All Night” are classics basically!

Now we’ll examine some more interesting bands basically…yet unknown to public.

Young Marble Giants were an experimental band active in the early 80s realising only one LP though called “Colossal Youth” This album would be considered somewhat an album with Brian Eno’s signature effects,without Brian Eno on the production…a really good effort basically.

After a few years the band members splitted and formed 2 separate bands…The Gist and Weekend

Gist’s album “Embrace The Herd” was similar in style with YMG’s “Collosal Youth”,and i might say even better since it included a nice pop song within called “Love at First Sight”

The other band was called Weekend which later became “Working Week” scoring a minor hit in UK called “Venceramos We Will Win” basically

Unlike most British bands, Wang Chung were in fact more popular in US, than their homeland. During the mid-80s they had a couple of top-40 hits, like "Everybody Have Fun Tonight","Let's Go","Dance Hall Days"

Points on the Curve is one of the best New Wave albums of that era. except the hit "Dance Hall Days" other good songs from this album were "Don't Let Go","Don't Be My Enemy" or "Look At Me Now"

Mosaic was great as well.
