I was having a conversation with a friend from work about Depression vs Sadness. I stated that very few people are sad nowadays, they just automatically jump to depression as a default term for sadness. Sad is defined as being affected by unhappiness or grief; sorrowful or mournful in other terms. Depression is defined as a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal.

More than that Depression will grab hold and paralyze you. You can't function properly in society when depressed. It's a crippling emotion where you can't see the light shining through the trees. It can take months to years to crawl out of depression. Mainly because you suffer alone thinking you're beyond help and hope. Your world knows no joy.

Being Sad is just moments of unhappiness that come and go. Your sad you didn't get your way, Didn't get what you wanted, your favorite TV character died or was written off the show and Your crush didn't return your feelings are all examples of being sad. You can bounce back from them rather quickly but you can still interact with society while sad.

It seems to me and the friend I was talking with that being sad is passé. No one really feels sad everyone just runs around saying they're depressed which takes away meaning from those who are genuinely depressed and need help.
