When I was in high school I had a best friend and we did literally everything together and were together everyday for years, and always had so much fun together. I've never felt so close to a friend in my life, we were completely inseparable. When I was 16 I developed really terrible mental health problems and had to drop out of school because of them. At the time I felt it was necessary for me to step away and no longer contact any of my friends (specifically my best friend) in order for me to focus on recovery and get better. When I decided it was time to get in contact with some friends I didn't want to contact my best friend, because (i realize now) I think I blamed along of my issues on her, which was completely wrong of me to do. She was an amazing friend to me and shutting her out was so unfair. A year later I messaged her on tumblr apologizing for what I did but didn't fully explain why I did what I did or what I went though. I heard from a lot of people she was extremely hurt that I stopped being her friend. She accepted my apology and said that if I ever needed anything she would be there for me which I really appreciate. I could tell she was definitely still hurt. I'm now 22 and she is 23. It's been on my mind recently to maybe offer (in an open-ended way) to meet in person so I can explain what happened and what I went though and sincerely apologize. I don't want to pressure her at all because I understand when we stopped being friends she was very hurt by what I did. My only concern is if I'm being unfair by suddenly showing up in her life, if my presence is unwanted. I'm not trying to force my way back into her life or be her best friend again because I know I was cruel by shutting her out. I just feel I owe her a full and honest explanation, even if it has been a long time. Let me know what you think.
