Search Results: actions louder than words

I've noticed this a LOT in the United States. Even around here where most think this is a liberal website I find many who think that liberal is a dirty word and a bad thing. Now, I never consider myself one thing or another. I definitely have liberal views, but there are conservative views I have too. So I seem to be one or the other depending on the issue. But I don't think either is a bad thing or a bad ideology. Hell, liberals believe in liberalism (obviously), and for those of you that are not in the know, liberalism is essentially

"a broad political ideology or worldview founded on the ideas of liberty and equality"

And

" Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally liberals support ideas such as capitalism (either regulated or not), constitutionalism, liberal democracy, free press, free and fair elections, human rights and the free exercise of religion."

What sounds bad about that at all to you? I never saw anything bad about that nor did I see anything bad about conservatism at all points. Sure if the tradition is harmful to a person, that is a problem, but if it's something good, sure, keep it going. And even conservatives are OK with change, as long as it's slow change. And that can be good too.

So I just don't get they hate for "liberals" or "liberalism" when the very thing liberals, true liberals, stand for and the very definition of liberalism is wholly American. The very principles our Founding Fathers had was very liberal. Even for our time it seems.

Now I'm sure people will bring up fascists who CLAIMED they were liberals or claimed they were socialists (which is considered a liberal stance), or whatnot, but just cause someone CLAIMS to be something doesn't mean they are that. Haven't you heard the phrase "actions speak louder than words?" And their actions don't change the definition of the word Liberal, it just shows them for what they really are.

I just don't get this hate against liberals and liberalism. It's not about giving free hand outs to people. It's not about everyone getting what other people earned, it's about fairness and making sure everyone as equal opportunity to succeed, that one group isn't lording everything over the other.

Where's the problem? Do you think people don't understand what liberals truly are?
