Is it normal for a guy to be rude and hurtful about it?

This guy talked to me for over three hours one night, telling me about his past and opening about things he normally doesn't share, and afterwards, always tried to find excuses to hang out with me. He would flirt a lot even though there were other girls around and I would catch him staring at me when he thought I wasn't aware.
He would also get irritated when I would talk about other guys in my life, particularly one really successful guy I had been talking to last year. He mentioned something about not being all that but "I know how to please a woman" is what he said before looking right at me intently. In anycase, I eventually started liking him and figuring he returned the feelings, told him about it. I don't normally do this and got really nervous, telling him he had helped me get over the guy from last year and basically making excuses for why I felt the way I did. He knows I've never done this before but instead of being understanding and realizing I was nervous-- I mean my voice was shaking and I felt like crying-- he said he was sorry I felt that way. He said he flirts with everyone and I wasn't an exception to the case. He told me he didn't go for girls like me. He said I was a good person but he didn't find me attractive. And then he claimed I was infatuated with him and questioned how I could really like him. He wouldn't even look at me while he said all this and looked really tense the entire time.

I've never been turned down before and most guys usually approach me first so I'm curious to know, is this normal guy behavior for when you all aren't interested in a girl?

I liked this guy for a couple months and it is possible he likes me too. He apparently gets nervous around me (I always thought he was secretly annoyed with me) and stares when he thinks I'm not noticing. He doesn't act like this with any other girl or basically anyone else. He basically flirts with all the other girls even though it doesn't really go anywhere. Anyway friends of ours told me to move on because they believed I was too mature for him and that he basically "had some screws missing from his head". I did my best to keep my distance just because I was afraid of getting hurt. A group of guy friends even said that his behavior around me is too ridiculous for me to put up with then basically put him down in every way possible. Months later my feelings are still the same and I dont think they are going to change anytime soon. Now I wish I didn't listen and didn't try to forget about him. Do you think it is too late for me? He still acts this way around me yet is with other girls most of the time (I used to convince myself they were better to try and move on from him). Should I try again even though my friends think I shouldnt? I know that I should do what I want and listen to them but Im afriad that if they are right they will use it against me and never let me forget it. I'm at the point now where I like him too much to even picture him ending up with someone else.
