Transferred to a new college back in August after a really traumatic roommate situation from my old college. I met this girl and we started a nice friendship. Over break we started talking about deeper things and how we were unhappy with our lives. She ended up breaking up with her boyfriend, and we kept talking more and more, but she started talking about this other guy she had feelings for when she was dating her ex. It had been a while since they contacted each other and she asked me if she should contact him. I said go for it even though I didn't like that. They pick things up, and my anxiety riddled brain and depressed mindset made me start freaking out about losing her. I think I had started to fall for her. I ended up telling her I used to have feelings for her and assumed things were over, but she still talked with me. She told her crush how she felt and he didn't feel the same. She was devastated and I knew she was confused and hurt, and thought it was over but she texted me the following morning. Soon she started flaking on me, and was meeting new people and making new friends and was all kinds of happy, including this gay friend she's been spending a lot of time with. I didn't get the hints that she didn't really want to talk a lot, but I kept texting her once every few days, and sometimes she was the first to talk. This week I had a terrible time, getting injured and parental issues and I ran into her on too many coincidences, and expressed my misery a lot. I finally apologized to her today about my obnoxiousness and awkwardness, but she said that she didn't want really want to talk. I told her I didn't get her hints and that she be direct. She said she wanted me to stop texting her because I was texting her too much and getting on her nerves. I apologized profusely and I offered to make up, but she said to "kind of just stop texting her right now" and to "just give it a rest", so I'm backing off hoping that things will get better and we can talk again.

Ever since I met her it's safe to say we clicked right off the bat and like any harmless crush I became more and more in love with this girl, so it's understandable that I felt crushed when I found out that she had a boyfriend.

I've never seen myself as a guy who'd try to break up a couple and I would never do that now.

After a year and half of spending time with her, we've gotten close enough for me to consider her my best friend, she knows me better than I know myself and I know know her better than anyone else. Yes, I've crushed on other girls but it never quite felt the same. We never had that spark I looked for.

So, my question is:
Is it fair to myself to keep waiting on that glimmer of hope that we could be together or should I distance myself at the risk of hurting her and losing our friendship?
