Here we are... the year 2014.

I am black, 23, have 2 degrees and do not follow social norms, and I really hate stereotypes!

I have noticed that my generation of people tend to be more open to other races and people of different backgrounds.

When I look at parents, they have a different mindset than we do, due to the fact that they grew up in a different era.

When I was a kid, I grew up in a white community. I have experienced some of racism from the the parents of my friends. For example:

-My friend could not invite me over because his mom did not really like the idea of her son hanging out with a black guy.

-When I used to have braids during my early teens, I had to wear a du-rag at night in order to keep my braids neat. When I had a sleepover at my friend's house, I forgot I had it on. When I went downstairs and saw his mom, she gave me a strange look... my friend later told me that his mom was worried that I was part of a gang after seeing me with my du-rag.

-While I was eating dinner with another friend, his parents told me they were really surprised how pleasant and well-mannered I was for someone like me -_-.

These are just little things I have experienced in my lifetime.
