I had an internship placement with a professor in my program. However, due to family circumstances that got beyond stressful and out of my hands. I forgot all about it and did not notify the professor I could not take the internship. They emailed me about it being time for setting it up and I told them I could not take it due to how far it was instead of telling them about the family situation. They then emailed me back with a very nasty email. I feel very bad for what I did but at the same time, I do not want to tell the professor about my family situation. I am also very intimidated and afraid of this professor. What should I do? What would you do?

My actual field of interest is different than that- it's Density Functional Theory and Q dots. I wrote to this person and they immediately took me in so I decided to give it a shot.

- Now few weeks ago I met a person in symposium and we had a talk in tea break. They asked me if I'm doing any internship. I told him about my internship in sensors.

He raised an eyebrow and was like "well do you think that this internship will help you learn something in your area of interest? Because as far as I know, your guide's research area is drastically different. Why are you doing it?" I am honest and I tell him that she accepted my CV and called me so I decided to give it a shot.

So he asked me to consider working with him and gave me his research papers in a flashdrive to go through. I went through them and his research aligns more with my interests.

So what should I do? Should I take up this internship? And what should I tell the researcher of previous internship?

Don't get me wrong, I love listening and helping people, at this moment 6 of my friends are having problems / dealing with stuff / complaining. But at days like this it just gets too much. I have a lot of deadlines at school, tasks at my internship, people wanting to meet up, intake for a job, ...

I have stress easily and I'm very perfectionist at a lot. Last year I had a burnout from working too much. I don't sleep a lot either, but at this moment I feel like I'm putting them > my own health. Because at this point I feel like very tired, demotivated and emotional.

It's not I don't have anyone to talk to but it's not really in dept. I just need someone who listens and someone who gives me a hug afterwards. But at the same time I don't want to put others in the same position as me + don't want to seem weak.
