The term empire derives from the Latin imperium (power, authority). Politically, an empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples (ethnic groups) united and ruled either by a monarch (emperor, empress) or an oligarchy. Geopolitically, the term empire has denoted very different, territorially-extreme states — at the strong end, the extensive Spanish Empire (16th c.) and the British Empire (19th c.), at the weak end, the Holy Roman Empire (8th c.–19th c.), in its Medieval and early-modern forms.

Etymologically, the political usage of empire denotes a strong, centrally-controlled nation-state, but in the looser vernacular usage, it can denote a large-scale business enterprise (i.e. a transnational corporation) and a political organisation of either national-, regional- or city scale, controlled either by a person (a political boss) or a group authority (political bosses).[1]

An imperial political structure is established and maintained two ways: (i) as a territorial empire of direct conquest and control with force (direct, physical action to compel the emperor’s goals), and (ii) as a coercive, hegemonic empire of indirect conquest and control with power (the perception that the emperor can physically enforce his desired goals). The former provides greater tribute and direct political control, yet limits further expansion because it absorbs military forces to fixed garrisons. The latter provides less tribute and indirect control, but avails military forces for further expansion.[2] Territorial empires (e.g. the Mongol Empire, the Median Empire) tended to be contiguous areas. The term on occasion has been applied to maritime empires or thalassocracies, (e.g. the Athenian and British Empires) with looser structures and more scattered territories.

American Empire; identifying an empire from the USAAmerican Empire, by its international behavior, is controversial. Stuart Creighton Miller posits that the public's sense of innocence about Realpolitik (cf. American Exceptionalism) impairs popular recognition of US imperial conduct. Since it governed other countries via surrogates — domestically-weak, right-wing governments that collapse without US support.[9] G.W. Bush's Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said: “We don’t seek empires. We’re not imperialistic; we never have been”[10] — directly contradicts Thomas Jefferson, in the 1780s, awaiting the fall of the Spanish empire: “. . . till our population can be sufficiently advanced to gain it from them piece by piece”.[11] This indicates that countries goals can change over 200 years.[12][13] In turn, Leftist historian Sidney Lens notes that from its inception the US has used every means to dominate other nations.[14]

So here's my deal. One parent's heritage, cultural lineage, political struggles, and social experiences all go back to the Middle East/No. Africa, as "Jewish" via Eastern Europe. During that time period probably most in that cultural lineage were religious, practicing Judaism, the religion of Jewish folks who are religious AS Jewish folks. (Jewishness CAN refer to a religious affiliation, which explains why some non-Jews can "convert". But that's not the end of the story by a long-shot.)

My other side is white/Christian, so let's just leave that be for now! lol

My Jewish parent was secular, not religious. Not religious at all. Not an atheist either. Probably believed in G-d. We never talked about it, and this parent died before I turned 20. :(

I was not raised with any practice of Judaic religion. None. Nada. Zippo. The first synagogue I went to was for this parent's funeral, or maybe for an earlier relative's funeral. At funerals I wore a yarmulke.

We didn't celebrate Hanukkah and celebrated Christmas as "A Great U.S. Capitalist Holiday". I didn't know what part of the Xian calendar year the Jewish High Holy Days happened. I do now. But I don't celebrate them, except to wish folks Happy New Year, every fall.

So I grew up as a white Jew. One non-Jewish kid asked me "Which half of you is Jewish?" I think, at age nine, I told her "the left half" or I wish I did as that would be politically funnier, what with the leftist tradition among some Jews who came to the U.S. and created cooperative housing and markets in NYC. I did visit Jewish relatives who were religious. So I wasn't completely ignorant. I knew about matzoh, knew what gefilte fish tasted like--and was made of, and studied HaShoah when a teenager, reading the Diary of Anne Frank and sitting through a harrowing nine hour movie called "HaShoah". For the non-Jews out there, "HaShoah" is the preferred term for what is often not so accurately called "The Holocaust". That latter term is English. The former term is Hebrew.

My Jewish parent and his mom (who also raised me) spoke English and Yiddish, also called "Jewish".

"Jewish" can be a language, a religion, an ethnic identity--not ONE ethnic identity, btw, but MANY ethnic identities, it can be treated by some, such as the Nazis, as "a race", it is a cultural group--not ONE, but many. It is a cultural-political lineage (like Blackness).

Black Jews are called, in Hebrew: Mizrahim. Brown and Asian Jews are sometimes called (in Hebrew) Sephardic, but this varies cross-culturally. Typically, Sephardic Jews don't speak Yiddish, as do Ashkenazi (European but not from So. Europe) do. The Sephardim have a language that combines Spanish and Hebrew. Yiddish is mostly German and Hebrew in origin. Sephardim are often called "Spanish Jews" which is misleading.

To do is considered racist by many people. To do so is to buy into a very dangerous pseudo-scientific ideology called "Eugenics".

Race is and always has been a politically constructed, socially and regionally relative, historically located, not fixed, phenomenon designed to oppress some groups of people.

The continent of Asia contains many hundreds of ethnicities.

Africa is not populated by "one race" of people.

Blackness is historically created, as is Whiteness. Indigenous/Native people can be ANY color or ethnicity. "Hispanic" is a term created by the U.S. Government and functions, in part, to increasingly disappear Native Americans from census reports.

"Colored" used to mean "Black" in the U.S., but not racist South Africa.

"Black" is what Aboriginal people in Australia are called by Aussie whites. U.S whites don't call Aboriginal people "Black".

"Aryan" and "Jewishness" were races in 1930s-40s Germany, but not since. And "Jewishness does not equal "Judaism". Judaism is a religion. Jewishness is an ethnicity, a heritage, a cultural and political experience, and can be found among all people across the globe, including Asians, Africans, and Europeans.

Ethiopia has had a Black Jewish culture for ages--not a white Jewish one. Ashkenazim, Sephardim, and Mizrahim are not "white" by "white nationalist/white supremacist" definitions. But in the U.S. generally, beyond the rigid and ridiculous racism of white supremacists, Ashkenazi Jews are white. Some Sephardic Jews pass as white, as do some Latina/os, some of whom are Sephardic Jews. Mizrahic Jews are never considered white, anywhere. This is all part of a racist political reality.

RACE isn't really genetic. It's designed to maintain oppression based on an idea of "racial differences". There aren't "Asian genes" and "Black genes" and "White genes". Any genetic issues among ethnic groups doesn't warrant there being "discretely defined races".
