I never got closure about this question. My ex was my first love. The thing I loved the most about him was that he was himself. Im humble but I came to realize that most guys only like me for my looks. Thats the thing I get complemented on the most, but people rarely take the time to know my personality or truly show me theirs. But with him, we were genuine. From the moment we met, I felt as though he was always being himself. And he came to realize that I didn't judge him one bit, even when he didn't have food in the house or money to take me out, I would bring food or I would TRY to take him out but he never accepted. He also bought me many expensive gifts, the most expensive was an apple ipad and he took me on dates every week and to his house most days. He even suggested I move in with him. He offered to teach me how to drive, he wanted to meet my family (I met his), he talked to me every day and every minute of the day I knew I could text him and within seconds he would be texting me back. He came to my job almost everyday for months just to see me. I gave him my virginity. Like, I thought I knew him. He seemed so real. We broke up because of him keeping secrets from me and damaging my trust but right we broke up he acted completely different, like he didn't care about me at all. I couldnt text or call him because he wouldn't respond most times, he became distant and acted like he didn't even want to fix things. He acted like a complete stranger and our relationship went from feeling real to nothing. He only texted when he wanted to have sex and he would drop me off as soon as we were done. He told me he still loved me, but I clearly couldnt work anything out with him because he didn't seem to want me anymore. At first I felt worthless but I eventually stopped giving a fuck. I want to tell myself that he never loved me because it seems logical since he treats me like nothing now after HE is the one who broke MY heart. But I dont know.

I'm not materialistic at all and I'm actually not a huge fan of getting gifts, however, I need other people's opinions on a discussion a friend and I were having. Even feeling as if a lot of holidays are just commercialized and are just meant to make sales on flowers and presents, I would get upset if the guy I'm seeing doesn't do something for, say, Valentine's Day (since it's coming up). I wouldn't expect a teddy bear the size of my car, a dozen roses, and dinner at a ridiculously expensive restaurant, but maybe a card and having the two of us make dinner together would be absolutely perfect. My friend feels as if it's not a big deal if a boyfriend or girlfriend chooses not to do something for you on holidays, citing the fact that most couples show their appreciation for each other on a regular basis and it isn't necessary to give each other special treatment on holidays. I still would be sad if my guy didn't even acknowledge that it was a special day. I'm wondering how other people feel about this.

Firstly before I explain here is some background: My boyfriend and I have been together 10 months. He has 2 children, one is 6 and the other just turned 5. I have a 6 yr old as well. He has his kids every second weekend. Each time he has had them he has spent those weekends at my house from Fri night to Sun night. The 6 yr old is reasonably behaved but the 5 yr old runs rampant through my home, can be disrespectful and doesn't listen very well. He has in the past broken several of my daughter's toys, the last episode was when he jammed a mermaid doll in my treadmill. Needless to say it took 30 mins to unjam my machine which could have been broken and unfortunately the doll was broken as a result. I let his kids play with pretty much all of my daughters toys in her toyroom even when they make the biggest mess each time and him mixing up games and puzzle pieces. It's very obvious that they have been brought up very differently to my daughter, pretty obvious certain values and morals have not been instilled in his kids. So the situation is as follows:

I chose to put some of my daughters Christmas gifts away in the cupboard out of harms way. a lot of what she got were expensive and in some cases breakable items. I was trying to prevent things getting broken and any unnecessary heartbreak to my 6 yr old. I mean some of the the gifts she got she hasn't even looked at properly or played with and she wanted to do those craft gifts with me. Knowing from previous times, his 5 yr old boy as broken a few of my daughters toys in the past and I didn't want to continue a repeat of this especially with her new stuff. My boyfriend took it the wrong way and insinuated that I didn't think his kids were good enough for our things. An over reaction on his part when all I was trying to do was protect some of my own childs things.

He got mad and even after explaining all this to him he doesn't seem to take it on board. I mean it's my home.

I mean gifts, gas, rent, food, dinner date, anything. Is it bad when a girl spends more? Is it bad when the wealthier one does not spend nearly as much as their partner. What should be each ones responsibilites. Is it not their partners fault if they recieve unasked for expensive gifts or should be expected to return the favor?

Since you all hate gold diggers sure much, lmao. And all the complaints against women for spending carelessly.

Imagine you bought your girlfriend a gift and instead of being happy she lectured you because you spend carelessly and not buying that gift would not ruined your relationship. Neither does she own more than three sets of ordinary clothes nor does she own any makeup and she doesn't even want a pet because pets are too expensive. Her income is quite decent enough for her to not spend money so less.

(I understand the difference between miser and economical very well, because we have a lot of these both types of women in our family.)
