Me and this guy have been talking for a little he said he doesn't trust people easily and he's never gonna trust anyone and he doesn't need anyone except his friends and family. ( obviously has trust issues from something happening) he seems really touchy whenever we are outside and I think something really bad happened to him. Okay anyway his birthday is coming up and I decided I wanted to buy him a a bday gift I know this is kinda manipulative in a way but he had the Choice to say yes or no. I asked him what he'd do for it ( regardless if he said no or yes I was gonna buy him the gift) I asked if he would tell me about himself and he said yes if he received gift , it wasn't really manipulative more like a way to actually want to get closer but having an object do so ( I know you can't buy someone's trust but I couldn't think of any way) so I brought him the gift and he received it. He stated before he doesn't ever talk about his past and everyone tells him to and he'd feel better. He looked terrified when I asked him to do so but he said yes. Now he has the gift and now he's avoiding me. I texted him and he said he'd tell me just not now and then I said well why would you even accept it that makes me not trust you I trusted you. And he never answered. He can't avoid me since we work at the same place but what should I do? He said he's still gonna tell me but not right now which makes me think is he ever going to? Should I confront him or leave him alone for now?

When someone- a friend, boy/girlfriend, family member, etc.- asks you what you want as a gift or your birthday or a holiday, how do you normally respond?

To be clear, I'm not talking about your parents or grandparents or someone else who it would be more common to actually request gifts from, or even give a "Christmas list", etc. I am talking about friends or other family members who you might feel more of a need to be "polite" to when it comes to these types of things.
