We moved in last year of October. Its an upper level, one bedroom apartment. There are 2 more tenants and the property is a home, split off into sections. Well, our Landlord refuses to sign a lease. He says he only "agree on handshakes". We we worried because a verbal agreement meant he could try to scam us, but he kept refusing many times when we asked for a lease. He walked in the apartment and walked through the house without notice, saying he didn't know if we moved out or not and that he called and knock a lot of times. This was a lie, no knocking and one phone call from a week ago. He kept hitting on my mother, like grabbing her and saying that he was naked. He said to my mother rent would be 200 for now. When February hit he said he needs more money from us. We asked what was the original rent and he said 450, but for us its 425. After my mom turned him down after he was hitting on her, he seemed to leave us alone. But then just yesterday he said we owe him 1000 for the beginning of the rent from last year. We never signed a lease and he never mentioned this in the beginning. He said we owe him nothing just a month before. Now he might increase our rent because we want to combine the efficiency with our apartment and this was his idea and said no charge a while back. I personally think he's playing us and forcing out money because of no lease. The other tenants have leases and one broke it, but is still living in the efficiency. What would you guys or girls do?
