My thesis concerning the solution to the ISIS problem is that the U. S. + NATO need to challenge ISIS for their own self preservation. My argument is based on three main facts: 1) Saudi Arabia is prime for a takeover by ISIS forces 2) Every global recession since the 1970's has been sparked by an oil price spike 3) The world economy is in a position of weakness, not strength

The issue today is that the Saud family is at significant odds with its own people, and this (as explained in the article) would allow ISIS to walk in largely unopposed.

2) The most integral part of a 21st century economy is a constant supply of cheap oil. Any interruption of this cheap supply means dire consequences for any modern economy, and it has been this way for over 40 years

The implications of an ISIS takeover of key parts of Saudi Arabia are quite serious. You would have one of the worlds largest suppliers of oil in the hands of radicals, a situation that would translate into panic, an oil price surge, then recession

3) A new global recession today would be worse than 2008, because we are starting from a "lower high." Basically, we aren't doing as well as we were in 2007 leading up to the last recession, so the world isn't as ready to cushion the blow of yet another global recession. The international labour organization has the data, which clearly shows that unemployment is still much too high
