Why do most people honour above all other things?

What I mean is when picking careers, most intelligent people choose jobs that give them high social status instead of jobs that they enjoy doing or jobs where they can help others.

For example, a lot of people want to be professors even though the job of a professor is extremely tedious, difficult, repetitive, boring, time consuming, exhausting and risky and it's because people want the social status that comes with being in a position of leadership.
