Why are snitches looked down upon?

It's the code of the streets.
"Snitches get stitches".

Even without living in the hood, it seems as if that is the code some people like to go by.

Some people will look at snitches worse than the person that committed the actual crime.

You get no respect from others for telling on someone else.

I've seen this happen in small situations like:
Telling on someone for cheating
to very big situations like beating someone up badly, or committing murder.

Everyone will witness someones murder... but no one will tell due to the code of the streets.

It's like once someone snitches people forget about the actual crime. All of their anger becomes directed to the person who told.
