racism is what's engrained into culture. Note that most black millenials' grandparents were born without all their rights, and are without the any immigration in their history, or inherited cultures and values from a non oppressive homeland.
@Lightning8 I think you missed a few of the words, but my basic understanding of your comment is that racism is ingrained in our culture and as such racism still negatively affects the rates of success of minority groups like blacks. I'll give two points of data that I think disprove this notion, but if you have some evidence I'm willing to hear it. 1) In the 1960s during the Jim Crow era (legalized discrimination) the single motherhood rate in the black community was ~20%. Over the next 5 decades we've made leaps and bounds in the civil rights movements yet still the single motherhood rate in the black community has increased to over 70%. Why did this happen? Is it because America is more racist today than it was during Jim Crow?2) I'll make this shorter. According to the BJS black on black murders increased by ~5% between the period of 1980-2008. Is that due to racism? How? Is the fact that black males are 7x more likely to commit homicide and 6x more likely to be victims racism?
I'd say racism didn't just go away with the civil rights act; that's just one federal move that makes overt discrimination illegal. Racism involves every aspect of life. This includes state and local govt, businesses, education, etc. Things happened like gentrification, the war on drugs, mass incarceration, documented unequal policing in black and white communities, crack vs cocaine. There's even an issue with welfare state (Thomas Sowell). These things, plus a distancing from group think had an overwhelmingly negative impact on poorer black communities. (Group think isn't inherently bad, but it is bad when it leads to the oppression of others) I don't have all the answers but this is how I've made sense of it. The stats you mention don't really disagree
@Lightning8 so to clarify, you think America is more racist now than it was during Jim Crow?
short answer's no, it's less racist. Longer answer is it's not about more racism vs less racism, it's about a cumulative effect. If you lessen the stream of water into a bucket but don't actually remove any water, the bucket will still get fuller and fuller is the analogy I'm thinking of atm.
@Lightning8 so you think the reason that black people are killing each other and having children at a disproportional and growing rate is because of old racism that doesn’t still exist? I’m assuming we agree that there aren’t any laws promoting discrimination anymore.
*having children out of wedlock
There are positives within the black population as well. Black women are one of the most educated demographics, if not the most in the country. Remember that this is sociology, not arithmetic so it isn't simple and easy. Refer again to the above examples of post Jim Crow inequality. The stream of water was lessened, but not to a sufficient rate compared to the rate of water being removed.
But to answer your question, it is the old racism's residual social effect. I feel like oversimplifying as well as overcomplicating are each all too common mistakes on this topic, causing misunderstanding. So it's best to be careful otlf that
@Lightning8 sure, nuance is always important. I just don’t see any reason to believe that black families were better able to maintain nuclear families when there was overt racism, but now are incapable when that overt racism is gone. If you want a single issue that’s to blame for the current plight of the black community it’s the single motherhood rate. It’s the same problem we see across all “races”.
I agree parenting is huge. One reason the nuclear family fell for black people is how the welfare state took poor fathers out of the household because the program was only available to women. Legally there was no overt racial discrimination, however the black population was and is a lot poorer than the majority so the black minority needed it more. I won't go into much more detail, if you'd like to learn more about welfare state specifically just check out Thomas Sowell
@Lightning8 I've checked into it. What role do you think personal accountability has to do with it though?
A big one of course.
@Lightning8 Maybe that's where we differ. I may be able to agree that black people are more likely to start off with a bad hand at life, but my solution is to inculcate a culture of personal responsibility. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. We all start out with some privilege over others and others may have privilege over us. Personal accountability is the only way to succeed.
think about how their oppression has impacted how they are raised.
many simply have not even heard of the options out there because of lack luster education n parenting
Why am I being downvoted? If you don't agree with me, find a way to articulate something that borders common sense. Perhaps we can reach an understanding.
I've seen plenty of poor Jews. My direct family is an example of a Jewish family that makes significantly less than average.
@tartaarsaus Fair enough; I personally haven't seen a poor Jew.In any case, they're typically doing quite well. Asians, by the way, in USA apparently have the highest median household income, yet they're a minority. So it's definitely not about "muh rayceesm".
@Metallsturm Meh, I'd say racism could be a reason if the new ethnicity is very new, has a lot of controversy in the headlines and is met with a lot of skepticism. So it's more of a short term thing where it could be on a larger scale. But in the long run I suppose it's mostly about education.
@tartaarsaus Typically they're given the same education, so it's mostly about culture, values and ethics of a specific race, plus natural tendencies.Asians typically are more inclined to be more intelligent; Europeoids are typically inclined to be more creative and innovative, Negroids are typically inclined to be more athletic etc.
I meant differences such as how many graduate college, what type of education they follow and things like that.
