Homeless student life, thoughts?

Homeless students can't afford housing. Thoughts? Why? #Homeless #Poor #Poverty

My Opinion:
I think it's part of the good ol' American dream; the wonderful thing of survival of the fittest. This is so great! (*Joking*)

I think housings and college should be cheaper and more affordable. In addition students should get loans and some financially support. It's because of you needs a high education to get a good job and making things too expensive, especially before you gets a good well paid job, you would end up in a massive debt. It's not communism or socialists spoiling kids giving them some support. It's just motivating more people to go to college, get a good job and work hard in addition to lift more people out of poverty. Scandinavia has a system that seems to work.

  • First, it's excellent that they are choosing to get an education to make a better life for themselves.

But homelessness is unconscionable to me. Most schools can help them if they visit the counseling office and ask about what resources are available to them.

  • I am going to try to save money to pay off my house so I can sell it or rent it out for tuition money for my kids. I am going to highly encourage them to go to a tech school which is cheaper. I am going to highly encourage them to either live for free with me or to rent with a group of friends where they will only be paying 200-300 a month for everything.

When I went to college I lived with my parents for free. When I wanted to move out for grad school, I rented with college kids for 200 a month, includes everything. I also worked full time at a call center and I worked over time. I made only a little over 2 grand a month but that was enough to pay off things.

  • I was homeless 15 years ago. A decade later I had two 50k vehicles and live in a 500k house. It’s work ethic. No weekends off, no vacations until you are in a good place. The difference was in my head. I had a loser attitude so I was a loser.

Girls on the other hand have no excuse to be homeless unless there are mental health issues. They can use either sex or the mere interest of sex to persuade any dude to let them live free. It’s a fact of life.

    • Some of the homeless people have mental or physical disabilities. Not all of them are visible though. Therefor working and studying are difficult for them.

    • That’s why I mentioned mental health issues. But yes you are right. I thought it obvious that the ones we can help are the ones doing it by choice or poor decision making.

    • my brother is homeless. These are the reasons I think he is homeless: 1. he is an alcoholic 2. has no real budgeting wisdom/knowledge 3. has no desire to be not homeless 4. he blames everyone for his problems and acts entitled and when he does not get what he wants, he goes and spends more money and drink some more causing him to have no money to pay rent so they kicked him out of his house... he tried living with me and my sister and did not work. I have given him a car so he can live in that. I tried telling him to stop wasting money going out to eat and drinking, to no avail.

  • More loans isn't going to fix the problem it says going to make it worse one of the main reasons why college is so expensive is because of government back student loans that gave the college is an unlimited supply of money. So they just increased tuition every year because they know no matter what is a way for you to pay for it. Then they just spend the money on administrative staff and stuff to make you want to go to the college that's non-educational like lazy Rivers movie theater so on.

The cost of living is because of not in my backyard laws refusing to build what is needed. We can easily build micro apartments that you can rent for probably $100 a month in City centers that usually go for thousands. But in many areas that are against the law because of minimum lot size law.

This problem is literally made by the government interfering and your idea is let's have the government interfere more

  • It's not a thing in my country, though rent is really expensive, at least 200 euros for an apartment, you can stay in a student as low as 30 USD, rent a room for 100 Euros and so on

    • In many parts of the world, college is free. And in other places, the extremely poor can get fee waivers, grants and scholarships.

  • I think it's unacceptable that the government let this happening, they should so something about it.

  • They should drop out, get jobs. Work towards paying off that insane amount of debt. Possibly become a cop or firefighter. Join the military. Not worth being homeless over.

  • Housing is cheap if you move to the middle of nowhere. The landlord in an area where there’s more demand should not be forced to reduce his income just because a broke person feels entitled to an apartment.

And students already can get loans. Super easy to get, low interest & you don’t even have to pay them back till you graduate.

A lot of schools charge too much for what they teach you tho

  • My college housing for one *semester* was $4400. You also must buy a meal plan which is another $1700. Tuition, fees, books, etc. was only $3500.
Absolute waste of money and a scam. It's much cheaper to commute or live with roommates in an apartment nearby.

  • I really don't understand this. I worked my way through college. I did have some student loans as well, that I paid off myself. My parents didn't pay for me at all. I see people complaining about having to pay off their student loans after school. That's what you signed up for. If you don't want to have those loans then don't go to college. Now having said that I do believe that college is more expensive than it needs to be. But you do have the option of community college.

    • Students these days say they can’t afford to do that... while spending 6 hours/day on social media & bar hopping

    • @valid9inches Dude you insulted first with the brainwashed & blind comment. I gave you a taste of the same level of respect you gave me. Own it & stop whining. Thanks

  • Yep. As someone who lives in a car I can attest to how lonely, defeating, difficult and harmful it is.

I almost died in 2017 from hypothermia and of heatstroke last summer. We (my mom and I) have no family willing to help us and we both have disabilities, she had arthritis abd diabetes and I have autism and mood and anxiety disorder.

So much hatred towards homeless people too.

    • have you tried low income housing? Have you tried to get disability help from the government?

    • @HOAAH im on SSI. They won't approve her and she's been appealing for years.

Everyone says "have you tried low income housing?"
Yes. Yes we have. It's been nearly 3 years. I don't think people realize that low income housing is horrendously underfunded, there are so many homeless people that there is a waiting list to get on the waiting list. The system is where if you make just a certain amount then you don't qualify anymore. It perpetuates a harmful cycle of poverty, homelessness and dependency on the government.

The government should support it's citizens, not trap them. But that's what they do...

  • Stupid. If you’re homeless you need a job not college.

  • Ah yes capitalism at its finest! Mwah!! Whats that you say citizen? You want to get an education to become a more productive member of society and make your country you so patriotically love so much even better? Well we are going to make sure you pay an arm and a leg and your first born to get it!!

    • Oh whats that you say? You went bankrupt trying to get an education and pay for basic healthcare? You defaulted on your student loans? Well we will make sure that debt follows you your whole life and you won't be qualified for any citizen privileges or services until you pay it off because there is no such thing as student debt forgiveness in the great number 1 country of the US of A!

  • College is expensive partly due to the housing. Much of the expense in college is made up of housing that is on par with a hotel. In some cases better than a hotel really. The tuition isn't usually the most expensive part. The biggest issue with this though is college students coming out of their school expecting the same environment and then being shocked that they can't have the same level of living on what they get payed as a starting wage.

  • I think it's a smart way to get through school with a hell of a lot more debt.

I mean you could bring prices down but not likely in California because their Gov is to liberal and will just make it worse.

    • Oh please old geezer talking about responsibility when you had it way easier in your lifetime. These kids are setup to fail from the start by a predatory school and lending system

    • Go smell your own farts somewhere else

    • @vald9inches no what’s predatory is educators brainwashing everyone into thinking college is a must to be anything in life. This simply isn’t true

  • Blame the government/system and their parents for not helping their kids. When would this evil system fall or collapse?

  • Scandinavia's system would not work in a country as large as America. It only works for small countries. Homeless college students are not very common in America, so it is not really an issue to worry about. We have too high a drop out rate to be handing out any more loans than we already do, and guess what, America gives out more in loans to students than anyone else, and that might even be true once the number has been changed to a per capita statistic. Homeless college students aren't an issue here. Homeless Veterans ARE. That is where we should focus. I am from a family that was in poverty my whole life and only recently got out. The only reason I can afford college is my grades, but guess what? I wouldve gotten a job and been able to go to college anyway after saving for a couple years, and I wouldve never been homeless. It is pretty difficult to be homeless while also attending college.
