If Israel had never existed, what do you think the Middle East would be like today?

Wars between the Arabs and Iran? Proxy wars between the Arabs and Iran? The Arabs having fights between themselves? Expulsion of religious and ethnic minorities? Genocides?

I think things would be pretty similar to today, come to think of it?

If Israel had never existed, what do you think the Middle East would be like today?

  • The Syrians, Egyptians and Jordanians would just fight over the area that we now know as Israel.

The matter of fact is that Israel is only involved in actually a tiny bit of the armed conflicts in the Middle East. Most conflicts in the Middle East have been between Islamic states, within them (coups) or interventions of the West. Leaving out the humiliations of the Arabs in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, the wars Israel fought were of little consequence.

So yeah, it would still be a war-torn region with genocide, flourishing dictatorships, wars between the countries there, ethnic conflicts, civil wars and the lot.

    • Edit: including those wars in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, they were not of massive consequence for the region in its totality.

    • Many people like to think that anything related to Israel is the main source for lack of peace in the Middle East, hence you saw the reactions that recognizing reality with Jerusalem as the capital would set the region ablaze.

That's just not true. The Arabs themselves have the tendency to set the region ablaze, Israel is small factor with this.

  • "Wars between the Arabs and Iran"
    That already happened.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran–Iraq_War

We already have proxy wars between Iran and Arabs too, Yemen and Syria for example. We also have a ton of expulsions and genocides going on against Yazidis and Christians, hardly an alternate history.

The only difference would be the area known as Israel would be a third world nation and there would be more Jews in Europe and the U. S.

  • Not much different than it is today! These people have been fighting each other since the beginning of time and apparently that is never going to stop with their fucked up beliefs with the most radical groups.

  • Don't know, but I would guess their would be a lot less dead Palestinian children and fewer palastinian children being dragged out of their homes in the middle of the night to be thrown in a jail and tortured with sleep deprivation. Don't get me wrong, probably would still be a catastrophy, but I don't think it would be as sever at least in that particular region (the rest of the middle east would still be the same).

    • Can you explain why that would NOT be happening, if Israel was not there?

    • The US backs Israel to counter the threat of iran to oil exports in the region, take out Israel it would just do the same to a country such as saudi Arabia more. It isn't Americans that are taking all the oil wealth out of the region, it is corrupt governments and businesses that are pocketing the wealth that comes from it.

  • There would still be conflict. It's difficult to say what the reasons for the conflicts might be, but there would most likely be conflict as there likely has been ever since the British and French divided the middle east after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

    • There was plenty of conflict before that. What became Iraq, in particular, was bandit country, during the late Ottoman Empire.

  • Most of the problems in the Middle East are caused by the American government by supporting terrorism while they claim to be fighting it all just for natural resources and geopolitical dominance over China and Big bad Russia

  • The Middle East has always been in turmoil due to its geographic position and natural resources, but it would probably be in slightly less turmoil as a result of not having Israel.

    • ISIS has launched missiles at Israel though.

And that could of course be that Israel, in contrast to the Iranian, Iraqi and Syrian army, is actually competent.

That's just conspiracy theories without any evidence.

    • Plus, Israel has actually arrested various terror cells of ISIS within their borders

  • They would spend all their time fighting each other over different forms of Islam
