Does it seem like many people have such a distorted view of politics that they consider any government involvement in the economy "socialism"?

Socialism is where the workers control the means of production. Government involvement can facilitate workers having greater control over the industry and a larger share of the profits but if it's not aimed at this, said involvement isn't "socialism" (or even leftist for that matter).
